Libraries in Mayo kicked off a major drive to encourage more readers this month, as they celebrated ‘Ireland Reads Day’ on February 22.
The event, which was held in Ballina Library last Saturday, was launched in an attempt to spike the numbers of people calling into their local library both in Ballina and further afield and capture the imagination of new readers.

The scheme, from Libraries Ireland, was supported by Mayo TD Dara Calleary, Mayo County Council’s John O’Hara, and County Librarian Austin Vaughan.
The event included a read-aloud, where the children in attendance read parts of their favourite books aloud and shared their experiences of reading together.
Minister Calleary described the library as a ‘hive of activity’ for the national day.
In all, 346,000 books were loaned from Mayo’s 14 libraries throughout 2024. However, this year they’ll be hoping that that figure can be driven upwards by events like last Saturday.
