MAYO TDs have this morning welcomed the announcement by the Department of Transport that €40.56 million is to be allocated for work on roads across the county. This marks an increase from the €36.7 million allocated in 2024.
Minister Dara Calleary said: “I am happy to announce that €40.56 million has been allocated to Mayo County Council in Regional and Local Roads Funding for 2025. This is a very substantial investment in our local and regional roads, an increase of €4 million on 2024, and will allow the Council to undertake necessary repair and rehabilitation works on roads that they have identified as in need of urgent attention. I am happy to have been able to advocate on behalf of the Council to secure this investment into our county.”
Minister Alan Dillon added: “This is a fantastic boost for Mayo, reflecting our ongoing commitment to enhancing road safety, improving connectivity, and making our transport infrastructure more resilient to climate challenges. Projects like the Kilmaine to Tuam upgrade and the Lahardane to Crossmolina road improvements will make a tangible difference to people’s lives, benefiting commuters, businesses, and local communities.”
The funding will be distributed across various crucial initiatives, including:
• Restoration Improvement Works – €21.6 million
• Restoration Maintenance – €2.7 million
• Supplementary Restoration Maintenance – €2.3 million
• Discretionary Grant – €5.3 million
• Bridge Rehabilitation Works – €933,500
• Specific Improvement Grants – €1.17 million
• Strategic Regional & Local Roads – €1.4 million
• Safety Improvement Works – €849,600
• Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience Works – €1.07 million
Several major infrastructure projects will benefit from this increased funding. Among the most notable projects are:
• R332 Kilmaine to Tuam (Foxhall) Upgrade – €1,200,000
• Cong Outer Relief Road – €200,000
• Killala Road Improvement (R314) – €1,000,000
• Derrywash Road Drainage Upgrade (L1710) – €38,000
• Lahardane to Crossmolina Road Upgrade (R313) – €30,000
• Bunduilee Sea Wall Repair – €55,000
• Islandeady Drainage Scheme (L1811) – €41,000
• Newport Town Bridge Rehabilitation – €195,000
• Caher Road Improvement (L-1913-71) – €56,000
• Mullahanowey Road Drainage (L13254) – €25,000
Mayo TD Keira Keogh also highlighted the importance of continued investment in both road infrastructure and road safety measures.
“Upgrading our roads is a major step forward, but we also need to focus on driver education, enforcement, and long-term planning to reduce accidents and save lives. I will continue pushing for further investment to ensure Mayo has a safer and more efficient transport network,” she added.
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, Minister of State Seán Canney and Minister of State Jerry Buttimer announced an overall investment programme of €713 million for regional and local roads in 2025. This represents an overall increase of over 8 percent in funding this year for road and safety improvements on the vast interconnected regional and local road network.
