Grammy disappointment as band with Mayo links snubbed

Fontaines DC and their fans were left disappointed as the band missed out at the 2025 Grammys.

The rock group has strong Mayo links, as bassist Conor Deegan and drummer Tom Coll hail from Castlebar.  The band was in esteemed company in their nomination for Best Rock Album, alongside the Rolling Stones, Green Day, and IDLES.

However, the decision to award the accolade to the Rolling Stones for their ‘Hackney Diamonds’ album didn’t go down well on social media.

“What a crime the Rolling Stones won Best Rock LP & not Fontaines DC,” one fan stated.

Another tweet saw the snub of Fontaines DC's hit 'Romance' album as the wrong call.

 “The Grammy’s are a joke,” they stated.  “With all respect to The Rolling Stones, but this wasn’t the deserved winner out of the nominations. Fontaines DC should have won for ‘Romance’.”

Fans of the band in the West will still be hopeful that ideas of a gig in Castlebar will still bear fruit.

Last week, Councillor Harry Barrett tabled a motion before a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District calling for Mayo County Council to work with the band’s management, Castlebar Chamber of Commerce and Connacht GAA to arrange a concert in MacHale Park in 2026.
