Centra and Supervalu have received 4.5 million bottles in Mayo from the Scheme
Mayo people have returned millions of bottles to Supervalu and Centra stores across the county in the opening year of the Deposit Return Scheme.
A recent report from the supermarkets details that over 210 million bottles have been recycled across Ireland in the scheme’s maiden year.
Mayo people represent 2.25% of the country’s returns, and the scheme has enabled the equivalent of every person in Ireland returning 42 containers.

According to Luke Hanlon, the managing director of Supervalu and Centra, these figures represent a significant buy-in from the Mayo public to the scheme.
This milestone is a testament to our customers who have made recycling containers a natural part of their grocery shopping routine,” he stated. “They see the benefits to them and the planet and have been supportive of the initiative.”
The buy-in from customers in the towns and villages has also had to be matched by the stores in these regions, and they were also singled out in particular for praise by Hanlon.

“I would also like to thank our network of dedicated retailers who through investment and innovation have enabled a broader shift to sustainability.”
According to statistics, Saturdays represent the peak time for returns across the board, which represents a peak time for household shopping in the week.
In the breakdown of figures in Supervalu and Centra, it was revealed that Supervalu saw higher volumes per return. However, Centra saw people going to the return points more frequently.
