Farmers seek clarity in trade deal controversy

Mayo MEP questions €1 billion farmer support fund

Farmers seek clarity in trade deal controversy

MEP Maria Walsh sought clarity on behalf of Irish farmers in Brussels on the Mercosur deal

MEP Maria Walsh has requested clarity on how the €1 billion Mercosur support fund will help Irish farmers amid fears of negative impacts from an influx of South American produce.

Last month, an agreement between EU and Mercosur saw the free-trade rules confirmed between European and South American countries.

The deal has courted controversy since gaining momentum in 2016 and gained criticism from government groups, farmers and environmental activists alike.

MEP Walsh has asked for reassurance for many concerned Irish farmers given the potential of an increased amount of exports, such as Brazilian beef, causing instability in Irish agricultural markets.

In response to the deal, MEP Walsh stated:  “In its current form, the deal will expose family-run enterprises to unfair competition due to an influx of lower standard products.

“Competition and trade is important but not at the expense of European and Irish farmers.”

The Boston-born politician, who has represented the Midlands North West constituency in Brussels since 2019, also demanded that any food imported from across the Atlantic must be held to the same level and standard as local products.

While the number €1 billion value of the trade deal may seem significant, it provides little for farmers without clarity on what it represents, according to MEP Walsh.

“Regardless of the value of the fund, it provides little comfort to Irish farmers if they do not know how, or if, it will support their incomes,” the Fine Gael MEP stated.
