ELECTED representatives have extended their sympathy to their council colleague, Cllr Harry Barrett, on the passing of his father, Harry Barrett.
Mr Barrett - who was well known in Belmullet, where he lived for 50 years - passed away in the care of Belmullet Community Hospital recently.
Members of Mayo County Council offered their sympathy to Cllr Barrett on his loss at their special meeting today (February 8).
Reared in Doire Choirb, Glencastle, Mr Barrett worked in Leeds in England for a number of years before returning to Mayo in the early 1970s.
He was employed as a truck driver and overseer with Mayo County Council and lived initially in Bangor-Erris before moving to Church Road in Belmullet in 1975.
He and his wife reared six children Mary, Colette, Michelle, Kevin and Stephen and Harry Jnr - who was elected to Mayo County Council in June and previously served as a Castlebar town councillor.
Mr Barrett was also a skilled stonemason and took a keen interest in history, politics and genealogy and took regular walks with his Cavachon dog where he often stopped to talk to people.
“He was a kindly neighbour, he was never slow in coming forward to help anybody who needed him because that is pretty much what everybody knew him as the man who got things done,” Mr Barrett’s daughter, Mary, told The Mayo News.
Local TD Rose Conway-Walsh extended her sympathy to the Barrett family and described Mr Barrett as ‘a lovely man’.
Harry Barrett is survived by his wife Breege and children Harry, Mary, Colette, Michelle, Kevin and Stephen, his grandchildren; Ethan, Eoin, Andrea, Maria, Matthew, Carolyn, Jim, Oscar, Ruby, Elsie, Ella, Finn and Poppy, daughters-in-law Siobhán, Tracey and Rachel, sons-in-law Richard, Seamus and Sylvester, brother John, sister-in-law Mariola, nieces, nephews, relatives, colleagues at the Belmullet branch of Mayo County Council, neighbours and friends.
He will repose at McDonnell’s Funeral Home, Belmullet on Thursday evening, February 9 from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock.
His funeral will arrive at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Belmullet on Friday afternoon for Funeral Mass at 1 o’clock followed by burial in Glencastle New Cemetery.
Live streaming of the Funeral Mass will be available for viewing on Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock.
May he rest in peace.
