ROADS in Westport have been left in a treacherous state after heavier-than-expected snowfall left motorists unable to move their cars this evening.
Reports have emerged of numerous cars being abandoned in the town with vehicles unable to move uphill due to the snowy conditions. Three local schools, Scoil Phádraig, Sacred Heart School and Rice College, will be closed tomorrow morning as a result.
Mayo is currently under a status yellow snow and ice warning at the moment along with several other counties.
In a post on social media, Westport-based representative Cllr Brendan Mulroy described road conditions as ‘lethal’.
“Very dangerous out. Please avoid any unnecessary travel tonight or in the morning,” Cllr Mulroy urged the public.
Met Éireann have issued an orange warning for counties Galway, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford will come into effect from 12am on Thursday and remain in place until 12pm.
Roads in every urban area in Mayo and all the county's national primary routes were gritted this evening prior to the heavy snowfall.
Heavy snow has also created treacherous road conditions in Castlebar.
