The most popular cars in Co. Mayo in 2024 have been revealed, as Volkswagen comes out on top with 448 newly licenced private cars in the county so far this year.
New figures released by the CSO show that the second and third most licenced car brands in the first 10 months of 2024 were Toyota with 365 newly licenced private cars and Skoda with 270.
The fourth most popular make in Mayo was Audi with 252 vehicles licenced for the first time. Hyundai came in fifth with 222 new licences.
There have been 3,184 new and second hand cars licenced in Co. Mayo in 2024, the data shows. Of those, 1,428 were diesel cars, 883 were petrol and 173 were fully electric.
A total of 183 cars were licenced for the first time in Mayo in October, of which just 16 were electric.
Hybrids accounted for 35 vehicles licenced in the county last month, while 85 were diesel and 47 were petrol cars indicating both continue to be most popular.
The most popular make was Volkswagen with 31 vehicles, followed by Ford with 23 and Toyota with 22.
Commenting on the new CSO data, Brian Kelly of EnergyEfficiency.ie said that the goal of having 945,000 electric vehicles on the road by the end of the decade is unrealistic.
"EV sales in Ireland have dropped off significantly this year, and trends show that the government's ambitious 2030 targets are not going to be met.
"So far in 2024, 14% of all new cars licensed for the first time were electric. This is compared with 19% in the same period last year."
He concluded: "However, the share of electric hybrids, excluding plug-in hybrids, among new private cars has increased from 17% to 22% this year."
