A group which campaigned for mixed-sex education in Westport has described the withdrawal of curricular collaboration between Sacred Heart School and Rice College as ‘a disservice’.
Co-ed for Westport has expressed dismay Sacred Heart School’s decision to withdraw their long-standing curricular cooperation with the all-boys Rice College.
The decision by the Sacred Heart School board of management to withdraw curricular collaboration has been met with widespread disappointment since it was first confirmed in a letter to parents of Sacred Heart School students in July.
This decision means that the long-running annual school musical jointly staged by the two schools will not take place.
Students will also not be taking subjects in the opposite campuses, as had been the case heretofore.
Sarah McGreal, Principal of the Sacred Heart School, said demand for curricular collaboration had been declining in recent years but urged parents with any concerns to contact the school directly.
Paula Ryder, Chairperson of Co-ed for Westport acknowledged that there were ‘multiple factors at play in the deterioration of the relationship between the two schools’.
“This is a disservice to the adolescents and families of the community. It is a failure in providing the girls with subject choices which could impact on college courses and future career options,” said Ms Ryder.
“Parents are fuming and are well within their rights to stand up and shout about this, this is not what they were sold on recruitment and registration of their daughters for the school. Our education providers have to be accountable to the families they serve.”
The Mayo News understands that the issue is highly likely to be discussed at a meeting of the Sacred Heart School parents’ association this evening (Tuesday).
The Sacred Heart School has opened up an online link for submissions for parent representatives for their new Board of Management, which is due to commence on October 15.
