With fatal road accidents unfortunately making headlines in Mayo, Tooreen Hurling Club have posted a powerful message:
"As l spend a lot of time away from Tooreen, l fall into that state of total nervousness and fear when a fatal accident comes up on the news ... involving (in the first hours) an unnamed person or persons. Is it one of my own family, is it someone l know, my friends, my neighbours, one of our hurlers, Camoige players or their families?" writes Austin Henry on the club's Facebook page.
The message comes leading up to Road Safety Week in a few but its universal message is, unfortunately, relevant as ever.
The appeal on the Tooreen Hurling Club social media account further reads: "To all young hurlers and Camogie players. You are the future, full of potential, dreams, and so much to offer the world. But remember, while you are irreplaceable, you are not invulnerable."
It is a compellingly written letter. Not just relevant to the members of this successful hurling club, but to everyone who drives on our roads.
