Suspect arrested after buildings and vehicles damaged during rampage in Westport

A man has been arrested and detained after two buildings and vehicles were damaged during a rampage which occurred in St John’s Place in Westport last night. 

Twenty-one window panes at the Westport Order of Malta building, a HSE residential building, a library, private cars and a minibus were smashed during the incident. It is understood that the suspect used a hammer and made no attempt to enter any of the buildings. 

Gardaí attended the scene this morning and are due to carry out forensic tests.

There are no reports of any injuries. A garda investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
