RWE Renewables to sponsor Mayo Mayhem

The event will kick-off on September 27

RWE Renewables has announced that it is the main sponsor of this year’s Mayo Mayhem.

The event, which is set to take place in Belmullet, is Ireland’s biggest annual windsurfing event.

Mayo Mayhem attracts the best windsurfers from across the globe who come to compete in the wild North Atlantic, trying to secure points for the windsurfing world tour.

The RWE sponsorship is very significant, as it enables the Mayo Mayhem event to achieve a ‘3-star status’ on the World Windsurfing World Tour.

‘3-star events’ have a set minimum prize money fund along with high quality video media productions such as the inclusion of high-quality drone video footage. Through the RWE funding, this has been achieved.

RWE has four operational projects nationally, including an Airborne Wind Test site in Bangor Erris.

Malcolm Scott, organiser of Mayo Mayhem, said he is ‘delighted’ to have RWE on board.

“The crossover between windsurfing and wind energy isn’t hard to figure out, and it is great to have them supporting us through this sponsorship as our country makes the transition towards carbon neutrality,” he added.

RWE’s Head of Onshore Renewables Development (Wind Solar and Storage) Ireland, Cliona O’Sullivan, commented on the sponsorship, saying it ‘highlights [their] underlying commitment to developing renewable energy in the Northwest’.

She continued: “RWE is currently developing onshore and offshore wind in Ireland as well as solar, battery energy storage and helping to develop new innovative technologies, including our Airborne Wind Test site at Bangor Erris.”

For more information on the event, see the Mayo Mayhem website.
