Ten groups across Mayo will benefit from the funding
Ten Mayo sporting groups have been allocated funding towards the cost of installing Electric Vehicle charge points at their club facilities.
This comes under the Shared Island Sports Club EV Charging Infrastructure Scheme, and will fund the installation costs for the charging stations.
Over 220 sports clubs nationwide were deemed eligible to progress to the delivery phase of the scheme.
This comes as a benefit for members and visitors alike, said Minister of State, Alan Dillon TD.
“This should see an important ramping up of public EV charging in local communities across the island and offer the potential for clubs to generate income from those more commercially attractive sites,” he added.
Minister Dillon explained that from 295 applications to the scheme, 227 met qualifying and suitability criteria.
“The main reasons some applications were unsuccessful were not satisfying some minimum requirements including - no licence submitted to facilitate site visits, no 3-phase electricity and/or no toilet facilities on site or within 500m,” he continued.
The Fine Gael Minister shared his delight for the many Mayo clubs who were approved for the first round of funding.
“This is another example of the good work carried out by sports clubs across Mayo and the people involved who are making a positive impact in their towns and villages.”
Furthermore, he said the infrastructure will play ‘an important role’ in the county, and country’s, journey towards sustainability.
“It makes perfect sense therefore that when people go to their local sports clubs, whether it’s to drop off kids, watch a match, play a round of golf or get onto the training field themselves, they can top up their EV charge while they are there,” concluded Minister Dillon.
