Shrule will host a talk on the site where Turlough Mor O Connor was said to have been crowned King of Connacht
SHRULE Community Centre will host a talk on a local site where Turlough Mór O’Connor was said to have been crowned King of Connacht.
The talk will, hosted by Dr Jessica Cooke, will argue that Shrule was ‘Áth an Tearmainn’ (Ford of the Monastic Sanctuary) where Turlough Mór O’Connor was made King of Connacht in the twelfth century, according to Irish medieval annals.
The only two references to Áth an Tearmainn in the annals likely refer to the same place, but its whereabouts are unknown.
It is now thought that the site near the early church site near the Black River in Shrule was the inauguration mound where Turlough was made king.
The talk will take place in Shrule Community Centre on Wednesday, September 11 at 8.00 pm.
