Seán Kelly and his Putóg Hunt
Master butcher Seán Kelly has created a €5,000 prize hunt across Mayo.
20 Kelly’s Putógs have been hidden on the Great Western Greenway across the county, and everyone who finds one will get a prize worth at least €200 from a €5,000 prize fund, with the top prize being a mountain bike worth €750.
There’s no entry fee, all Greenway walkers, cyclists and runners are invited to keep an eye out for the elusive Putóg between Monday 19 and Saturday 24 of August.
The black, kidney shaped Putógs could be anywhere along the Greenway from Westport to Cashel on Achill Island, with some exclusive hints being available on social media.
Kelly’s Putóg
“This is Kelly’s Butcher's way of saying thank you to all the Greenway users who have called into our shop and Kelly’s Kitchen in Newport over the years. We appreciate your business," said Mr Kelly.
“Hop on your bike, lace up those walking shoes and get yourself, your friends and your family on the Kelly’s Putóg Hunt. One prize per Putóg so you have 20 chances,” he added.
The Kelly’s Putógs will nest somewhere on the Greenway itself, there is no need to go off the track or beyond the fence line. Each one has a unique identification number on it and a label with details of how to redeem the associated prize. Anyone who finds a Putóg should take it and the label with them and bring it to Kelly’s Butchers in Newport to get their prize.
The ‘Putóg’ is the traditional Irish black pudding, which was made in every farmhouse in the West of Ireland. The filling was a combination of oatmeal, onions, suet, blood, salt and pepper and other easily sourced ingredients. Originally, it was made in the time-honoured casing of a sheep’s stomach.
Award-winning butchers, Kelly’s of Newport, are keeping tradition alive by producing the ‘Putóg’ in its original form. The word ‘Putóg’ actually translates from Irish as ‘gut’, or ‘belly’.
Kelly’s Butchers Shop and the Kelly’s Kitchen café next door are on the main street in charming Newport town, right on the Greenway itself. Kelly’s would like to thank all the businesses who have supported the Putóg Hunt by giving prizes and vouchers.
