THERE'S a huge cloud of sadness over West Mayo as the community around Clew Bay mourn the passing a hugely popular local. Declan Nevin, Mullaun, Newport and Nevin’s Bar, Main Street Newport passed away peacefully on March 18, surrounded by his loving family, and the sense of loss is palpable.
Predeceased by his parents Teresa and Michael, his sister Angela Irwin, his sister-in-law Loyola McHale, his parents-in-law Tom and Patricia McHale, and his precious little boy James.
Beloved husband and best friend of Jo-Ann (née McHale), devoted father to Angela (Ronan), Paul, Michaela (Finn) and Seán (Sophie), and adored Grandad of Conn, MacDara and Aodán.
Deeply mourned by his sisters Geraldine (Bertie), Finola (Tom) and Fidelma (Michael), his brothers Michael (Geraldine), Colm (Paula), Kevin (Denise), Rory (Carmel) and Adrian (Elaine), his aunts Bridget Munnelly, Annie Cannon, Freeda O’Malley, Evelyn McGrath and Annie Moloney, his brothers-in-law Padraig Irwin, Tom McHale (Berniece) and Frank McHale, his nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, extended family, wonderful neighbours and many friends.
Declan was passionately involved in the community and served many roles at his beloved Glenhest Rovers. He served as Chairperson and Manager over the years and was a loyal and passionate clubman. Declan was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the club’s 50 year anniversary at Christmas 2024.
There were many memorable moments experienced in Declan’s pub, Nevin’s Bar in Newport, where kind-hearted and humorous conversations were the order of the day. Another one of Declan’s sporting passions was following his beloved team, Arsenal.
The Glenhest Rovers club paid tribute to one of their departed clubman on social media. You can read that by clicking below.
