BATHING restrictions which had been in place at a popular Mayo beach have been lifted.

A restriction on swimming at Carrowmore Beach near Louisburgh was put in place on July 11 after a malfunction at the Louisburgh Agglomeration Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Samples taken from the water indicated that the water was safe for bathing, but restrictions on swimming remained in place until after the water treatment plant became fully operational.

Local county council Chris Maxwell welcomed the lifting of the bathing restriction, which he described as ‘a disaster’ for the area during the busy tourist season.

Cllr Maxwell has called for the water treatment plant to be upgraded or replaced after works at the Newport wastewater treatment plant have been completed.
