Westport-based first time election candidate Keira Keogh has joined the chorus of gratitude and thanks to retiring TD, Deputy Michael Ring.
Keogh worked closely beside Deputy Ring during the recent local elections and narrowly missed out on securing a seat for Fine Gael in the Westport Municipal District.
Keogh said this afternoon: “I know Michael has agonised over this decision for months, but ultimately he had to make the choice that is best for him and his family. I hope he has many years of quality time with his loved ones ahead, although I cannot imagine him relaxing too much!”
As a recent first-time candidate in the local elections, Keogh said she experienced Deputy Ring's kindness first-hand.
“He is always a phone call away to offer guidance or answer a question. From spending time with him on the campaign trail, it is easy to see why he has consistently topped the polls. Every road we went down, we met someone he had helped, whether it was with life-changing issues like social housing or urgent matters like passports.
“He was always invited inside, offered a hug and a cup of tea. It’s clear that his constituents love him for his work ethic, his commitment and his famous ‘Ringo’ personality. On one particular walkabout in Westport town, I watched as it took us 45 minutes to get from SuperValu to Portwest on Shop Street - a mere 250 metres - such is his popularity. He has a unique ability to connect with people of all ages, from every background and across political lines. He was never never afraid to speak his mind and has a lot of fun along the way.”
Keogh said that along with being very popular, Deputy Ring's achievements in politics also have to be lauded.
“Deputy Ring will be remembered for championing sports and recreational facilities during his time at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with Special Responsibility for Tourism and Sport. He will also be widely regarded as the first minister for Rural amd Community Development helping advocate for projects like the recently completed path on Croagh Patrick.
“You don’t have to look far to see some of the essential infrastructure projects he supported, such as the recent upgrade to the N5 from Westport to Turlough.
“Michael has always been deeply compassionate and non-judgemental towards his constituents, and his contributions have been profound and far- reaching.
“I want to extend my best wishes to Michael, his wife Anne and all their extended family and thank him again for his tireless, unwavering service and more importantly your friendship. I will continue to be inspired by your legacy and leadership. The question now is, how do we celebrate his career and who will create the Michael Ring Statue?” concluded Keogh.
