OVER 900 primary school children in Mayo are currently awaiting assessment for HSE’s School Dental Scheme.

The HSE Regional Forum West was told that there are 911 children still awaiting assessment for the scheme, amounting to 29 per cent of targeted classes.

The HSE currently provides dental services to children under six and children attending primary school. Children are screened in Second, Fourth and Sixth Classes and are referred for treatment if necessary to the local dental clinic.

There were 3,162 children in targeted classes in Mayo primary schools enrolled in 2023/24. A total of 213 have undergone treatment that has yet to be completed while 2,038 (65 per cent) of the 2023/24 cohort had assessment and treatment completed.

Speaking on behalf of the HSE at the meeting, Charlie Meehan, said that Sixth Class have been targeted as a priority due to a ‘lack of resources in the area’.

Mr Meehan added that no children in Second Class were currently being seen due to the lack of resources.
