The scene outside Tolan Street in Ballina after a fire broke out in an apartment above Boylesports
A man who died following a fire in an apartment in Ballina has been named as Dusan Ivan.
Mr Ivan died on Thursday after a fire broke out at an apartment above BoyleSports in Ballina on Tolan Street. Another male was taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after emergency services arrived on the scene at approximately 8.15am.
Road closures were implemented as the fire brigade worked to extinguish the fire. Mr Ivan's body was removed and conveyed to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem.
A native of Slovakia, the 40-year-old had been living in the Ballina area but was working in security in Westport.
Stella O'Malley, whose husband knew Mr Ivan well, described him as ‘a really lovely guy’.
Gardaí have said that enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of Mr Ivan.
Local councillor Mark Duffy described his passing as ‘devastating news’ for the community.
