Belmullet Tidal Pool is one project receiving funding
Four outdoor recreational projects in Mayo have been allocated a combined €895,974 in funding under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
Deputy Michael Ring TD confirmed the funding today, and said he was ‘pleased’ with the ‘substantial’ allocation.
“The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme provides funding for the development of new outdoor enhancement or promotion of existing outdoor recreational infrastructure in rural areas across recreational infrastructure,” he explained.
The projects for funding include the Wild Atlantic Way Céide Coastal Path, Raheen Wood Biodiversity Trail, Martin Neary Woodland Trails, and Belmullet Tidal Pool.
As well as supporting existing outdoor recreational infrastructures necessary ‘repair, maintenance, enhancement and promotion, the scheme supports outdoor activities such as walking, trekking, cycling, kayaking and hiking.
Deputy Michael Ring continued: “It helps to make use of the resources of the countryside that contribute to healthy, active lifestyles. It supports the economic and tourism potential of the area for both local communities and tourist visitors alike”.
Deputy Ring called the scheme ‘central’ to the development of the recreation facilities in recent years, which have been enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.
"The benefits of the outdoors to people’s wellbeing can not be overstated”.
He concluded: “The funding under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme provides vital opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors in a safe environment.”
