A WEEKEND of guided walks will take place in the Nephin Range in west Mayo this June Bank Holiday Weekend including the new Jamise's Well trail.
A number of walks have been organised to take place in the Wild Nephin National Park this weekend which traverse the spectacular Nephin Range in west Mayo.
On Saturday, June 1, the first guided walk of the weekend will be along the new Jamise's Well trail. Meeting at 10am at the new car park at Srahrevagh, from there walkers will walk 10km through forest roads and onto the new boardwalk to the Wells. Along the way, they will stop off to visit the restored McCann cottage, which was originally home to local man Paddy McCann and his family until their death during the Great Famine.
The cottage was restored by National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff as part of an innovative heritage project to restore former cottages for use as bothies to provide shelter for hikers, walkers and star gazers visiting Wild Nephin National Park.
On Sunday, June 2, a guided walk will lead walkers on the 5km loop in Letterkeen at 10am. Also on Sunday, there will be a guided walk at 1pm on the 2.5 km Vary Loop. The meeting point for both of these walks is the bothy car park in Letterkeen.
On Monday, June 3, NPWS staff will be holding a guided nature trail walk at the Ballycroy Visitor Centre at 11am and again at 2pm. All events are free to attend, and no booking is required.
