A student was airlifted to Mayo University Hospital yesterday after sustaining a head injury while climbing Croagh Patrick.
The seventh call out of the year for Mayo Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT) came after lunchtime yesterday to assist a member of a school group who were climbing the reek.
The young man sustained a head injury after falling while descending the mountain.
MMRT requested assistance from Coast Guard Rescue, after which the student was located and treated before being transported to Mayo University Hospital.
The voluntary organisation wrote on Facebook: “A young student fell while descending the summit cone and sustained a head injury. MMRT responded and requested assistance from Coast Guard Rescue- 118 helicopter.
The young man was quickly located, treated by R-118 medic and, with help from MMRT, winched aboard R-118 helicopter for transport to Mayo University Hospital.
Mayo MRT was stood down at 15:00
