CROSSMOLINA Community Council has requested permission to install a bust of the late former GAA President Dr Mickey Loftus.

The council’s chairperson, Maureen Timlin, has written to Declan Turnbull, Head of Ballina Municipal District, requesting permission to erect a plinth with a bust depicting the All-Ireland winner outside the library on Main Street in Crossmolina.

Dr Loftus was the last surviving member of the last Mayo squad to win the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1951.

He later captained Mayo to an All-Ireland junior title in 1957 and refereed the All-Ireland senior football finals of 1965 and 1968.

When he retired from playing, Dr Loftus became a prominent administrator within the GAA, serving as Connacht Council chairman before rising to the office of GAA President in 1984.

He enjoyed a long career in medicine and was outspoken against alcohol sponsorship of sporting events.

Thousands of mourners attended his funeral following his passing last April. He was 93.

His son, Cllr Michael Loftus, is the current Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.

The matter is to be discussed at Friday’s meeting of Ballina Municipal District Council in Knockmore/Rathduff Resource Centre – the last time the council will meet prior to the June election.
