Mayo JPC calls for garda retirement age to rise to 65

Former garda Cllr Christy Hyland calls for action to address ‘crisis’ in garda recruitment and retention

Mayo JPC calls for garda retirement age to rise to 65

MAYO’S Joint Policing Committee has called for the age of garda retirement to rise to 65 to deal with ongoing recruitment and retention issues in the force.

The age of retirement from An Garda Síochána recently rose to 62 to help maintain existing garda numbers. The maximum age for joining the force has also risen from 35 to 50.

Cllr Christy Hyland, a member of the Mayo JPC, proposed a motion calling for the JPC to write to the Minister for Justice on the matter due to the ‘crisis’ in recruitment and retention in the force.

The JPC heard that the number of gardaí in Mayo has dropped by approximately 8 percent in the last two years.

Cllr Hyland said that gardaí were currently leaving the force faster than they were joining. He also echoed calls for the reinstatement of a dedicated Chief Superintendent in Mayo, citing a recent recommendation from the Oireachtas Justice Committee.

Chief Superintendent for Mayo and Roscommon/Longford Ray McMahon has been responsible for policing in Mayo, Roscommon and Longford since taking up his post in 2021.

His office is based in Castlebar.
