THE trial of a Castlebar man accused of murdering his elderly neighbour last year is due to take place in the Central Criminal Court early next year.
John Brogan (83) was found dead in his home at Pleasant Hill, Castlebar on March 5, 2023 by emergency services who responded to a fire at the address. It quickly emerged that Mr Brogan had suffered gunshot wounds and a subsequent Garda investigation led to the arrest of his neighbour Kevin McHale of Annagh, Castlebar, who was later charged with the murder of Mr Brogan.
The inquest of Mr Brogan opened in Swinford Courthouse earlier this week but was adjourned to a later date following an application by Detective Inspector Denis Harrington.
The Coroner for Mayo, Pat O'Connor was informed that a trial start date has been set for February next year and will take place in the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
Mr O'Connor agreed to adjourn the inquest to a later date pending the completion of the Garda investigation and criminal proceedings.
