Almost €1 million in drugs was seized in Mayo in 2023
ALMOST €1 million in drugs were seized by Gardaí in Mayo last year, the Mayo Joint Policing Committee (JPC) has heard.
Figures presented at today’s (Friday) meeting heard that €21,000 worth of drugs and approximately €1,000 in cash has been seized so far this year.
Over 32 detections of sale and supply of drugs were recorded in 2023, as well as one detection for cultivation and 91 for simple possession.
Approximately €20,000 of cash was also seized by gardaí last year.
This comes despite fraud, public order offences, sexual assaults, thefts from vehicles and minor assaults all dropping.
Inspector Dennis Harrington highlighted thefts from shops as ‘an area of concern’ in the county.
Four-hundred-and-four such incidents occurred in 2023, an increase of 33 percent on the previous year.
Gardaí are continuing to provide advice to shops in order to prevent thefts.
Criminal damage also recorded a rise of 20 percent in 2024.
The Mayo JPC also heard the numbers of burglaries had returned to ‘pre-Covid figures’ following a 25 percent jump in 2023.
Speaking at the meeting, Chief Superintendent for Mayo and Roscommon/Longford said that most burglaries occurred between 3pm and 8pm in the evening and urged the public to be vigilant.
An investigation remains ongoing into an aggravated burglary which occurred in the Killasser area last month.
Superintendent Gabriel Moran told the JPC that crime in the South Mayo policing area had seen an overall decrease of eight percent.
