Dillon has said while the resignation of Leo Varadkar might seem less than ideal, it also presents the party with a unique opportunity to reconnect with their support base.

The Chairperson of the Fine Gael party, Mayo TD, Alan Dillon wants a 'fair, unified and respectful' contest to take place for the leadership of the Fine Gael party.

In a statement to The Mayo News, Deputy Dillon said while the resignation of Leo Varadkar might seem less than ideal, it also presents the party with a unique opportunity to reconnect with their support base and re-energise their members across the country in a dignified and collegiate manner.

“We have been lucky in Fine Gael to have stable leadership over the past 22 years with Enda Kenny in place for 14 years and Leo Varadkar the past 7 years. Every party goes through periods of transition, and it’s during these times that we have the chance to renew and reinvent ourselves.”

Deputy Dillon added that the party can now take this as an opportunity to reflect on its recent difficulties, learn from them, and emerge stronger.

“As the elected Chairperson of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party, my responsibility within the party is to ensure that this leadership contest is conducted in a fair, unified, and respectful manner.

“Yesterday, I had a meeting with the General Secretary and the Chair of the Executive Council to ensure that the process of choosing our next leader is well-organised and supervised by the Fine Gael Executive Council.

“The nomination process has begun, and it would not be appropriate for me to publicly declare my personal choice for the next leader at this point. I will maintain my impartiality until a leader is chosen. I am confident that we will navigate this transition with grace and unity, and continue to serve the people of Ireland to the best of our abilities.”
