Ireland West Airport Knock
MAYO County Council is currently recruiting for a manager for a designated zone that could deliver thousands of jobs near Knock Airport.
Ireland West Airport Knock (IWAK) received approval for the designation of lands as an area for the establishment of a Strategic Development Zone in May 2017.
The SDZ would create a tax-free zone around the airport with potential to create up to 4,000 jobs in the region, it has been claimed.
The monthly meeting of Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District was told that the local authority are to conduct interviews for a manager to oversee the development of an Strategic Development Zone (SDZ) at the airport.
Joanne Grehan, Director of Services for Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District, said the new employee would be tasked with creating a ‘roadmap’ to develop the SDZ.
Ms Grehan said that she would inform the working group assigned to the SDZ of a broadband rig at the airport that has not been activated.
Cllr Neil Cruise had expressed concern regarding the rig, which was constructed with EU funding in 2009, saying it should be ‘the first priority’ of the new SDZ manager.
The Fine Gael councillor also said that the new SDZ should facilitate industries other than aviation.
