MAYO TDs have today warmly welcomed plans to develop and invest two town centres in north and east Mayo.

Michael Ring, TD, has welcomed the publication of the first ever Town Centre First plan for Killala in north Mayo.

The plan for Killala has been developed in consultation with the local community and it represents the vision of local people for their area and contain proposals for a diverse range of projects such as redeveloping derelict sites, creating community parks and walkways, boosting SME and tourism potential, and protecting historical landmarks.

A new Town Regeneration Officer is also being appointed to Mayo County Council to drive implementation of the new plan with the support of Government funding through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Town Centre First Heritage Revival (THRIVE) Scheme and the Historic Towns Initiative.

The Town Centre First approach empowers local communities and businesses, supported by Local Authorities, to guide and direct investment to maximise the particular strengths and assets of their town.

“I welcome the publication of the plan for Killala today. Our towns in Mayo have such potential, particularly if vacancy and dereliction is addressed. I have no doubt that the Killala Town Centre First plan will make the town a better place to live, to work and to enjoy,” said Deputy Ring.

Minister of State Dara Calleary, TD, said he was pleased to announce that Ballyhaunis has been selected to also to develop a Town Centre First Plan under a scheme supported by the Department of Rual and Community Development.

“€30,000 is being made available to assist in developing the Town Centre First plan for Ballyhaunis. The Town Centre First approach empowers communities and businesses, working with Mayo County Council, to guide and direct investment in the town. I wish all involved every success and offer assurance of my ongoing support and availing to assist in any way.”
