Building on the huge success of last year, where over €50,000 was raised to support the endless work done by the Irish Cancer Society, the Westport Relay for Life committee have come back together with some new faces to try and raise even more this year.
Last year was an all round success with a large crowd of cancer survivors leading the group on the first lap of The Mall in Westport, a visual reminder of the strength, support and hope that is there for those suffering from cancer.
This year's event will take place on May 18 and 19 and the committee are calling on locals to gather their friends and family, sports teams, social groups or work colleagues to support the event.
“Its very rare to find a home unaffected by this disease that has taken many a loved one from our lives far too soon,” said a spokesperson for the committee. “Our Relay event is a 24 hour challenge that involves team members sharing a walk around our track as a community to show that we will not rest until Cancer does.”

The weekend will include two days of amazing local talent taking to an outdoor stage on the Mall with speakers, dancers and much more in the indoor marquee. There will also be team tents filled with games and interactive fundraisers, food trucks and much much more.
Candle bags
“As part of this event, we now have our candle bags available. These are a beautiful token to remember those who have passed, someone struggling or just a loved one we want to send some love to. These bags are just €5 and are a huge part of our fundraising efforts throughout the event. “They are available from our committee members or in O'Briens Shop on James Street. On the Saturday night at dusk (approximately 9.40pm) we have a very special part of our event called the 'Candle of Hope' ceremony. This involves all the beautiful candle bags purchased and dedicated to beloved family members being illuminated on the Fairgreen where they remain throughout the night to shine as a beacon of hope to those walking throughout the night. We will share some beautiful words and music and there is an indescribable feeling of unity and strength between the crowds gathered. It's a very special section of the event. This closes out Day One but walkers remain on the track throughout the night under the candle and moonlight, each doing their chosen slot to support their team and those we stand with. If you are unable to attend over the weekend or would like to support the event we are always happy to accommodate this.
“Donations, be it financial or in the way of a service or fundraising event to support, are very much welcomed and appreciated. We are hugely grateful for being able to host this event in the heart of Westport on the South Mall/Fairgreen. This is only possible due to the wonderful support of the Mall residents, the local Gardai and the council along with many local services and businesses that have again come out and offered to support the event in any way possible. In times of financial strain this is more appreciated than ever,” concluded the spokesperson.
