€36.6 million in funding has been allocated to improve and maintain roads across Mayo.

This comes as part of a significant €658m nationwide investment package announced today by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan TD, and Minister of State Jack Chambers TD.

Minister Dara Calleary said the investment will allow the council to ‘repair, strengthen and maintain’ roads, ensuring they are fit for purpose.

“We are dedicating resources towards initiatives such as road repair, bridge rehabilitation, road safety measures, community engagement, drainage improvements, and climate change adaptation” said Minister Calleary.

€810,000 of this is for specific improvement works, including Glencastle road, Kilkelly Relief Road, the Lahardane to Crossmolina Road, the Killala Regional Road, Kilmaine to Tuam road, and the Cong outer relief road.

Deputy Alan Dillon outlined the climate change adaptation grant as an ‘important part of this allocation as it ‘will help future-proof our roads’.

“There is now more support available for drainage works, flood protection, severe weather works and salt purchase so that we can better prepare ourselves for whatever weather conditions this year brings,” said the Mayo TD.

Announcing the funding, Minister Ryan said his ‘main priority’ this year is ‘safety for all road users’. He said the key to this is to protect and renew existing regional and local roads.

Minister Ryan called the protection and renewal of road networks ‘essential for maintaining social and economic connectivity, linking people and places across the country’.

“Central to this is the need to ensure that the journeys that people take, whether it's a quick hop up the road or a longer trip, are as predictable as possible and as safe as possible” he said.
