MAYO TD and Minister of State, Dara Calleary will launch the new Slievemore Heritage Trail on Achill Island which promises to be a landmark event for both locals and tourists alike.

The Slievemore Heritage Trail is a trail approximately 3km long which aims to highlight the rich archaeology of the area with the objective to improve public access to a number of important archaeological features.

Slievemore on the north of Achill Island is considered to have one of the oldest human settlements on the island with megalithic tombs indicating habitation in the area some 5,000 years ago.

Spearheaded by the dedicated efforts of the Slievemore Heritage Trail Committee, this initiative aims to unveil the rich tapestry of history, archaeology, and culture woven throughout the majestic landscapes of Slievemore.

The unveiling ceremony by Minister Dara Calleary will take place at the Deserted Village on February 16 at 3pm and will mark a pivotal moment in the preservation and celebration of Slievemore's heritage.

Dr Edward King, Chairperson of the local Slievemore Heritage Trail Committee, expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “This heritage trail encompassing the Deserted Village and the megalithic tombs at Slievemore will be of immense interest to both the local community and tourists alike.”

At the heart of this innovative project lies a commitment to seamlessly blend tradition with technology. Visitors will be invited to embark on a journey of discovery through the ages, guided by a cutting-edge mobile application accessible via QR codes stationed along the trail. This immersive experience promises to open up the hidden stories of Slievemore, unravelling the mysteries of its ancient past while fostering a deeper appreciation for its cultural significance.

The unveiling of the Slievemore Heritage Trail is not only a new chapter in tourism but also a testament to the unwavering dedication of the community towards safeguarding its history and heritage for generations to come. Dr Edward King stated: “It will inform visitors by means of a special phone app using a QR code of the archaeology, history, and culture of this area, and ensure the protection of these monuments for the future.”
