Pat O'Connor adjourned the hearing until Garda investigation is complete.
A decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on charging someone in connection with the death of 60-year-old Peter McDermott following an assault in Westport last year, is being anticipated.
At a preliminary inquest hearing in Swinford Courthouse, Garda Inspector Denis Harrington said that a file was sent to the DPP regarding the matter, and now they will decide whether or not someone will be charged in relation to the death, and if so, what the said charges would be.
Peter McDermott (60) a Leitrim man, had been living in Westport with his wife and daughter at the time of the incident. Following the assault, which took place late at night in Westport town last September, McDermott died at Mayo University Hospital due to his injuries.
A young man in his twenties was questioned at the time, but was released without charge shortly after.
The inquest was adjourned to a later date by Coroner for the District of Mayo, Pat O’Connor, determining the outcome from Garda investigations.
