Planning lodged for major redevelopment of Balla town centre

16 new housing units and commercial space mooted for former hardware shop

Planning lodged for major redevelopment of Balla town centre

PLANNING permission has been sought to develop 16 housing units and commercial space as part of a major redevelopment in the heart of Balla’s town centre.

Paul Tansey and Brian Tansey have lodged an application with Mayo County Council to develop five two-bedroom townhouses, nine three-bedroom townhouses, and two one-bedroom apartments at vacant commercial buildings at The Square.

The plans also propose to develop mixed-use commercial premises with room for offices, a hair and beauty salon, a gym and a café at the site of the former McEllin’s hardware store.

The works will involve the demolition of existing sheds and outbuildings, the partial demolition of existing commercial buildings and formation of a new development entrance.

The proposed development will also see the construction of bike and bin stores and extension, refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing commercial buildings.

The application has been welcomed local county councillors Donna Sheridan and Cyril Burke.

Cllr Sheridan, a native of the town, said the development would be of huge benefit to Balla.

“In 2024 there will be progress on the €120,000 funding for the enterprise hub in the court house and the community park in woodlands and the opening of a new sensory garden. This coupled with the new development in the square going for planning, I think it will be a very exciting 2024 for Balla,” Cllr Sheridan told The Mayo News.

“I’m hoping that it will be successful and that it will add to all the facilities in Balla and the growing town that it is,” Cllr Burke told The Mayo News.
