Knock Airport closed once again due to dense volcanic ash

A statement from Knock Airport this afternoon has confirmed that The Irish Aviation Authority has advised a closure of the airport until at least midnight tonight. This is due to denser volcanic ash being dispelled high into the atmosphere from the erupting Icelandic volcano. Passengers scheduled to travel to or from the airport during this closure are advised not to go to the airport, but instead change their flight bookings on line at their respective airlines.


Gardaí in Ballina seeking witnesses to fatal early morning collision

Gardaí in Ballina are still investigating a fatal collision which occurred in the town yesterday morning at approximately 8am. The collision occurred on O’Rahilly St, Ballina, between a pedestrian and a lorry. A 65-year-old female was pronounced dead at the scene. A forensic examination of the scene took place before the road was reopened yesterday afternoon. Witnesses with information are asked to contact the Gardaí in Ballina on 096 20560.


Claremorris teacher convicted but walks free from court

A former Marist brother and primary school teacher, originally from Claremorris, has been convicted of 35 charges of sexual abuse against four young boys at a Sligo school over 40 years ago.
Christopher Cosgrove (66) of Cloughreevagh, Ballyhaunis Road, Claremorris received a 12 month sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court yesterday afternoon. However, Cosgrove walked from the court a free man having already served a year in prison for the offences.
