Here come Jedward; ‘Work-to-rule’ strikes in Castlebar; Mayo misses out on schools funding
Jedward mania hits Mayo
The secret’s out! 2009’s most unlikely pop sensations, Jedward, are coming to Mayo. The Grimes brothers are currently all over the radio with their version of the Queen classic, ‘Under Pressure’, and Mayo fans can see them do their thing live when they play the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on April 6, with tickets going on sale tomorrow morning (Thursday) at 9am.
Court services continue ‘work-to-rule’
The Mayo Court Services, whose central offices are located in Castlebar, are this week to continue a ‘work-to-rule’, ahead of possible all out-strikes in protest at Government cuts to public sector wages. The public counters at the District Court Office in Castlebar will be closed until 1pm this afternoon, while there will be an embargo on phone calls, both incoming and outgoing, from 1pm to close of business. The Court Services have not yet indicated how long they intend to continue with the ‘work-to-rule’ protests.

Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe yesterday announced a school building programme of €579 million - but not one project will go to construction in Mayo in 2010. The only good news for the county was the announcement that tender documents have been authorised for an extension and refurbishment of Scoil Íosa in Ballyhaunis.
