Michael ComminsMICHAEL English (pictured) is currently on his first Irish tour for some years and the Kildare man is delighted to be back on the scene again. Shows in this region include a concert in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on Sunday, March 22 and in the Town Hall Theatre in Galway on Monday, March 23. The tour began in the Ardowen Theatre in Enniskillen where Michael received a very warm reception.
“They were a lovely audience and everything went so well on the night. I’m delighted to be back touring again and meeting the people all over the country. I am also lucky to have got good spots on the Late Late Show and Tubridy Tonight while the radio stations are also very good to me.”
This is his first concert show since Louis Walsh took over at the helm. The Kiltimagh native, who received the Mayo Person of the Year award at City West in Dublin on Friday night, has high hopes for the young man from the midlands.
“Michael is the real deal. He has talent, he is an accomplished pianist and performer. He’s a young guy with a natural, old fashioned charm that audiences fall in love with. He’s just a really likable, honest guy doing songs he loves.”
It was while still a teenager back in 1997 that Michael dropped by to see Big Tom and The Mainliners perform at a show in Dublin. He was spellbound by their audience rapport and spoke to members of the band after the show. The result of that meeting was that bandleader Henry McMahon, suitably impressed by the ambitious nature of young Michael, decided to give him a newly-composed song ‘The Nearest To Perfect’.
This song gave Michael English his first major break at national level and went on to become one of his most requested numbers. Rosette Records, under the direction of Mick Clerkin, signed up the talented young artist and he recorded some albums for them over the next few years.
Some months ago, Michael released his latest 16 track album, ‘All My Life’, which was recorded in London and produced by Nigel Wright who has also produced albums for Barbara Streisand, Jose Carreras and Sarah Brightman. The UK release of the album will take place in May. Tickets for the shows in Castlebar and Galway are now available from both outlets.
