Galtymore recalled on radio show
CLAREMORRIS Community Radio broadcast a one-hour special on the Galtymore Ballroom in London on Christmas Day. ‘Home from Home’ was a documentary on the most famous Irish dancehall in England that closed its doors in Cricklewood, London last May. Pete Connor, who presented the show, was in the Galtymore for the final two dances which featured Big Tom and The Mainliners. It was truly the end of an era for the Irish in London. The Galtymore, more than any other venue, was at the heart of the Irish experience in London for close on five decades. Among those interviewed for the show were Jack Flannery from Bushfield, Hollymount, who has lived in London for many years and Tom Cryan from Bohola who is currently a FÁS supervisor in Crossboyne. Both shared memories of the ‘Galty’ back through the years. “The Galtymore played a huge role in the lives of thousands and thousands of Irish people. It can never be underestimated the impact it had on the Irish community. It really was a home away from home for so many people,” says Pete Connor.
