Country Roads Big Tom McBride is all set for a comeback, and the TF Royal Hotel will host two dates on his tour.
Big Tom comback show for TF, Castlebar

IRELAND’S iconic country star, Big Tom McBride, is all set for a comeback. And the TF Royal Hotel will have the honour of hosting the first two dates on his tour which gets under way on Friday night, February 1. Such is the phenomenal interest that it has been decided to organise a weekend around Tom’s visit to Castlebar. He will now perform on both the Friday and Saturday nights with supporting acts each night. It is also understood that all the original Mainliners are coming together for the February tour, which will be staged over four weekends at various venues. Announcing details of the Castlebar shows last week, Pat Jennings from the TF Royal Hotel said they were delighted and honoured to have secured the services of Big Tom and the Mainliners on their inaugural tour date after almost three years off the scene. “When it comes to country music, no singer generates the same interest and following as Big Tom. He is a truly remarkable man and has been the biggest country attraction at our hotel going back to the late 1960s. “We know that demand for accommodation around Castlebar and neighbouring areas is going to be huge as Big Tom fans travel from all parts of Ireland and overseas. It is testament to his enduring appeal as a man of the people that he is still the king after all those years.” Tour manager, Kevin McCooey, says they are all delighted that Tom has decided to go back on the road for a few shows. “We are being swamped with calls and good wishes since the news broke in recent days. The goodwill for Tom is just incredible. It is there in every part of this country. He reminds many people of good times and happy times in the dance-halls all over Ireland and across in England down through the years. “Tom is his own man and he waited until he believed he was ready for the shows again, following his health scare a year ago. At the big night in the Carrick Court Hotel near Carrickmacross a few weeks ago, around 2,000 people got to their feet to give him a standing ovation as he emerged into the hall. That’s the kind of love and respect there is for the man wherever he goes. He’s a real legend.” Tickets for the Big Tom and the Mainliners shows (dances) went on sale on Friday and are priced at €30. Already, it looks as if both shows will be completely sold out well in advance. In the meantime, Big Tom will headline the opening night dance in the new Community Centre in his home village of Oram, three miles from Castleblayney, on Thursday night, December 6. And a number of friends from the West are already making plans to travel to Monaghan to join him on his home patch. The Community Centre is located on lands provided by the McBride family to the local Oram GAA Club. A bronze sculpture of Big Tom was unveiled beside the centre on July 8, 2005.
