A rewarding Reek walk
Commins Calling Michael Commins
THESE Boots were made for Walking’ may well have been the signature tune for some members of the staff at Mangan’s in Castlebar who recently undertook the Tóchar Phádraig walk from Ballintubber to the top of the Reek and back down again. A chat among staff saw eight members commit themselves to the fund-raising venture on behalf of Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. And the enthusiasm of the group was reflected in the fact that they raised €5,630 in the process. The Tóchar walk is no easy undertaking and all who complete it, or the greater part of it, know they have been in a challenge. Over 50 walkers in all, some from various parts of the country, started off from Ballintubber at 9.15am and those who walked all the way to Murrisk, climbed the Reek and returned to base, eventually enjoyed a well-earned rest in Campbell’s pub around 8.30pm that evening. The members of the Mangan’s ‘team’ were James Keane, Bridie Murphy, Frank Duffy, James Prendergast, Declan Ginty, Olivia McHale, Michael Barrett and Tom Duffy. They wish to extend grateful thanks to all who contributed so generously to their walk and climb and who supported the cause with such enthusiasm. Thanks also to the back-up team that provided refreshments on the day and a special mention for Fr Frank Fahey and Sarah in the office for their support and encouragement with the venture.
Bound for New York marathon
Heading for the city that never sleeps in a few weeks time are PJ McHale from Ballyvary and Peter Jordan from Breaffy who are taking part in the New York Marathon and raising funds for the Mayo-Roscommon Hospice. They have organised a big table quiz night for Frank O’Reilly’s in Ballyvary on this Thursday night, September 27 and it starts at 9pm. There’s a first prize of €150 with €100 for the second team and €50 for third spot and there will be lots of other prizes too. The quiz is expected to attract a big entry from over a wide region. PJ and Peter tell us that all support will be very much appreciated on the night.
