The Westport Triathlon, June 23, includes a 750m sea swim, a scenic coast cycle and a 5k run along the Greenway
Gearing up for Westport Triathlon
Westport is now synonymous with adventure-sport events and for very good reason – hardly a month goes by without a major event that fitness enthusiasts can embrace. Next up is the Westport Triathlon, which takes place on June 23. Taking in all the sights of the town and its surrounding scenic coast, the race begins with a 750m swim at the pier at Westport Quay. This is followed by a cycle along the coast road out to beautiful Bertra and back again. Much of the return cycle route will be on the cycle path back in to Westport. The race will finish with a 5km run on the Greenway and harbour. Triathlons are becoming more and more popular in Ireland, and are no longer deemed to be for just the elite or superfit athletes. Westport Triathlon Club encourages newbies into the sport and believes that this race is the perfect opportunity for those wanting to dip their toes into a multi-discipline sport. It will also give experienced triathletes a great day out and, of course, another chance to beat their PB times. After the triathlon, there will be well-deserved post-race food and a prize-giving ceremony at the Atlantic Coast Hotel at Westport Harbour.
For more information on the Westport Triathlon, see www.westporttriclub.ie. The race is formally sanctioned by Triathlon Ireland (National Governing Body of Triathlon).
