One of the UK’s top adventure racers, Bruce Duncan, is getting ready to take part in Gaelforce West 2011
WESTPORT BOUND UK adventure racer Bruce Duncan will take part in this year’s Gaelforce race.
International flair at Gaelforce West 2011
Gaelforce West 2011 looks set to be another fantastic event for Westport and the local area. The popular event combining biking, mountain running, trekking and kayaking over 67 km, looks set to sell out for the 4th year in a row, with over 3,000 competitors and their supporters traveling into the area for the weekend. Last year saw competitors flying in from New York just to take part and this year one of the UKs top adventure racers, Bruce Duncan, will be taking part in the event to give the Irish athletes a run for their money. Bruce won the Nokia Coast to Coast in the UK last year and has also been a member of the winning team for the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race, which is believed to be one of the toughest adventure races in the world. “Racing in Ireland will be new for me, I have never been, so really looking forward to getting over there, fingers crossed the weather is good so I can enjoy the amazing views so many people have told me about” said Bruce. “It is one of my big races this summer, and I am currently training hard to ensure that I can compete with top guys in the race on their home turf”. Organisers are hoping that Bruce will bring a more international, competitive edge to the event, and will raise the profile of the event across Europe. This year will see over 100 Gardaí take part in Gaelforce West in aid of the Tania McCabe Foundation which is raising funds for the special care baby units in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and unit 8 in Holles Street Hospital in Dublin. Tania McCabe was originally from Louisburgh and thus it is fitting that an event close to her home town was chosen as the first fundraising event.
