Local election candidates call for stricter taxi rank enforcement

Two sitting Castlebar councillors acknowledged the issue at a council meeting this afternoon

Taxi drivers have complained about cars being parked in designated ranks in the county town.

New signage and road markings are currently being put in place to improve the identification and control of taxi ranks in Castlebar.

This comes following a number of taxi drivers complaining to Castlebar Municipal District members about people parking in taxi ranks and blocking them.

Above being frustrating for taxi drivers, it also makes it ‘difficult for people to get taxis’, that is according to Councillor Donna Sheridan, who said the issue was 'unacceptable'.

Brought up at a meeting today, Cllr Sheridan, said at nighttime, ‘there are no traffic wardens around to monitor’ the issue.

Cllr Sheridan stated she has spoken to taxi drivers and there are many issues facing the drivers in Castlebar.

Cllr Blackie Gavin added that the issue ‘does not only occur at night’.

Cllr Gavin proposed that the taxi drivers are invited to make a deputation to the Castlebar MD, this was seconded by Cllr Sheridan.

Head of Castlebar Municipal District, David Mellett, explained that while signage marking can be updated and improved, the laws must be enforced by traffic wardens and the Gardaí alike.
