Released on Friday last, February 28, ‘Aer Dogs’, is written by an award-winning journalist and co-founder of business publication, ‘The Currency’, Tom Lyons.
The book tells the story of a small team of Irish trailblazers who made low-cost air travel available to billions of people across Europe, Asia, North America and Latin America. Lyons traces the tale’s roots back to Tony Ryan, the aviation pioneer behind leasing giant GPA and Ryanair.
He also delves into what happened next, covering Irelandia, a groundbreaking aviation-investment company led by Ryan’s son, Declan Ryan (also founder of the One Foundation, which set up Books at One in both Louisburgh and Letterfrack). Irelandia took Ryanair’s low-cost DNA global through a string of airlines: Allegiant, Tiger Airways, Viva Aerobus and Viva Air.
Lyons’ book reveals the cut and thrust of the ultra-competitive world of aviation, a world where fortunes can be gained and lost, taking the reader behind the scenes of to show an incredible journey. From the boardroom to the boarding gates, Lyons reveals how Ryan and his team brought airlines to the stock market and battled to help them avoid bankruptcy. The tale of the team that became ‘Aer Dogs’ is one of entrepreneurship, resilience, grit and overcoming the odds.
Declan Ryan will be in Books at One, Louisburgh, for a ‘meet and greet’ this Friday, March 7pm. ‘Aer Dogs’, by Tom Lyons, is also on sale in the bookshop.
