Folk fans will be thrilled to learn that one of Cork’s finest ambassadors of the genre will be playing in Westport this weekend. Singer-songwriter Ger Wolfe will take to the stage of Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar this Sunday, undoubtedly to a packed room of devoted followers. Support will be provided by celebrated Westport folk musician Tony Reidy.
Drawing from the wells of traditional and contemporary folk, Ger Wolfe continues to be a gentle and consistent voice on the Irish folk-roots scene. The beauty of his beguiling songs – all at once lyrical, melodic and poetic – is complemented by his unmistakable voice and inimitable guitar playing. Many will know Wolfe’s well-loved ode to innocence, ‘The Curra Road’, which was justly described in The Boston Globe as a ‘classic of grace and simplicity which should become a folk standard’.
Ger, complete with a battery of instruments, continues to tour his latest and ninth CD ‘The Morning Star’, featuring the likes of ‘Hello Gorgeous’, ‘When We Were Farming Land’ and ‘I Won’t Forget Your Name’.
He is also currently working on his next full album, ‘Songs from Freeman’s Ballyvourney Collection’ (‘Amhráin ó Bailebhúirne’), which should prove to be one of our most important collections of traditional songs. This eagerly anticipated album is due for release in spring 2025.
• Tickets to Ger Wolfe in Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar on Sunday, November 10, will be available on the door (€15 each). To prebook, email uri@westportfolkbluegrass.com. Doors open at 7.30pm, concert starts at 8pm.
