An exhibition of new work by Mayo artist Jane Williams is currently running in the Clew Bay Hotel, Westport, until the end of the month.
Originally from northwest England, Williams has lived in London, France and Spain. She has now made her home in Louisburgh, where she paints full-time.
Entitled ‘Journeying Home’ this latest solo show explores themes of journeying back within ourselves to find the ‘home’ or ‘dwelling place’ where our connectedness to the natural world can be rediscovered. “Here, there are no boundaries or points of separation; here we realise we are a small part of a whole entity, which shares the same breath,” the artist says, adding: “In this, we sense that our one small prayer joins with a million others to become a powerful force of hope.” The paintings in this show depict her personal path to this ‘remembered home’.
Williams paints on small wood panels to create what she calls ‘intimate icons of meditation’. “The small scale of my work belies the expansiveness of the subject, but invites the viewer to look closely and explore their own perception of the story,” she explains. “My work develops slowly over time by adding and taking away layers of watercolour paint, soft pastel and wax, delving deep into the textured layers of our shared memories.”
• ‘Journeying Home’, an exhibition of new paintings by Jane Williams, continues at The Clew Bay Hotel until June 31.
