TY student Conall Keating reviews THQ’s new Metro 2033 – an intense story of underground survival.
A nuclear hit for THQ
Gaming Conall Keating
Set in a subway of post-apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story with intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands. In 2013, civilisation as you know it was destroyed by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all of mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A brave few remained and took refuge in Moscow’s metro system to face a new breed of evolution. Twenty years later an entire generation has been born and brought up underground. The besieged cities in the Metro Stations struggle for survival amongst themselves and the mutant horrors that await outside. You are Artyom, born after all the devastation, raised underground. Having never set foot outside your Metro Station City limits, until a few days after your 20th birthday one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to other cities in the Metro system, and to warn the remnants of mankind about a terrible danger.
Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of the human race. I have played and finished the game and was sad to see it end. The story is interesting and great to follow. The game is quite short, but you’ll be happy to know that it has two alternate endings which allow the player to complete the game more than once. As you play the game you get to know Artyom and what he is all about, to understand how the world became involved in a nuclear war. As the game progresses you will face new mutants to fight and people to befriend. There is a wide range of weapons to choose from, from a double-barrel shotgun to a nail gun – your enemies won’t know what hit them. (The recommended age group would be set towards a mature audience due to its mild language and violence). I think that this is a fantastic game. Get a hold of it to find out what you’re missing.
