Theatre Joxer Daly takes centre stage in an entertaining, funny and intriguing theatrical production starring Phelim Drew
DREW APART Phelim Drew’s depiction of O’Casey’s famous character Joxer has been widely praised.
Joxer Daly, Sean O’Casey’s playful scrounger from the SeΡn O’Casey classic ‘Juno and The Paycock’, takes centre stage in an entertaining, funny and intriguing theatrical production at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar this Thursday, April 11, at 8pm. And bringing this Dubliner to life is Phelim Drew, himself a son of a very famous Dubliner, Ronnie Drew.
‘Joxer Daly Esq’ is a new play from the pen of Eddie Naughton (‘Inishfallen Fare Thee Well’). With events that were to alter the course of Irish history as a backdrop, ‘Joxer Daly Esq’ charts an everyman journey from respectable member of The Foresters Association to a vagabond scraping by with only his wit as collateral.
From the 1913 Lock Out to the Rising – and the events of O’Casey’s classic ‘The Plough and the Stars’ – to the birth of a new divided Nationalism, we see it all through the eyes of a survivor like no other.
Joxer Daly is an ordinary person trying to navigate the difficult waters of Dublin in the period leading up to the birth of a Republic. Brilliantly wrought by Drew, Joxer’s love of language, humour, literature and song, blended with a drinker’s purple recollection, makes this a performance like no other. Drew’s performance has been described as a ‘powerhouse’, by the Sunday Independent, which also proclaimed: ‘Joxer ever flew so high’. Billed as a thoroughly entertaining, thought-provoking look at one of Irish Literature’s most loveable chancers, ‘Joxer Daly Esq’ promises to be a real treat for O’Casey fans and anyone with an ear tuned to the vernacular.
