Hands up for a jazz gig

MUSIC Ronan Guilfoyle’s jazz collective Hands will play in Campbell’s Tavern this Sunday, March 12

ALL THAT JAZZ Ronan Guilfoyle’s jazz collective Hands will play in Campbell’s Tavern this Sunday, March 12.

THE first of a series of big jazz gigs in Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover, Headford, takes place this Sunday, March 12, when Ronan Guilfoyle’s Hands comes to the north Galway venue. The gig, presented by Campbell’s Tavern and Headford Music Works, takes place at 5.30pm, with support by the Headford Youth Jazz Ensemble.
Hailed as ‘challenging and absorbing music from a maturing master’ by The Irish Times, ‘Hands’ consists of two of New York’s finest musicians, Dave Binney and Tom Rainey, as well as two Irish musicians – Ronan Guilfoyle who has forged an international career over the last 30 years and his son, Chris Guilfoyle, an up-and-coming young musician fast making a name for himself in the music world.
Binney is one of contemporary jazz’s finest saxophonists – always in demand, recording extensively and extending the role of the soloist in contemporary jazz. Rainey is one of most highly regarded drummers in modern music. He has a reputation for combining technical brilliance and creative flair, always placed at the service of the music.
Ronan Guilfoyle is one of the major figures in the Irish jazz scene, with an international reputation as both a bassist and composer. Chris is rapidly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso guitarist, as well as a bandleader of note.
Hands, who have released a CD of the same name, represent the best in contemporary jazz. Their sound ‘balances power and lyricism with celebratory flair’ (allaboutjazz.com) and has been described as ‘akin to good poetry’ (londonjazznews.com) and ‘worth spending quality time with’ (Stephen Graham, marlbank.net).
Irish-based jazz band Roamer, featuring vocalist Lauren Kinsella, will play in Campbell’s Tavern on Friday, April 28.

Admission costs €10.
